The Alibaba Filter: How to Tell a Real Factory from a Trading Company in 5 Minutes

Every Alibaba listing looks like a factory. "ISO 9001 certified. 10 years experience. 100+ workers. Export to 30 countries." The problem is that trading companies copy that template, and shell operations copy the trading companies. Buying from a trader is not a problem — paying factory prices to a trader is.

You don't need a site visit on day one. You need five questions that separate the three types before you spend a dollar on samples.

Five questions that tell you who you're talking to

1. Ask for the business scope on the business license. A real manufacturer's license lists "manufacturing of" plus their product category. A trading company's license lists "sales" or "import and export." If they refuse to send a clear photo of the license with the legal entity name matching the Alibaba account, that is data point one.

2. Ask for the factory name and address, then cross-check on Map apps. A factory that says "we have three plants" but can't name the street is usually a trader. A real manufacturer will tell you the district and city, and you'll see their building on Street View. This takes 60 seconds.

3. Ask for the production line and QC process. "What does your QC check 2 hours before shipment?" A factory gives you a process. A trader gives you "we inspect." If they can't name the test equipment — IP rating tester, Hi-pot, cell sorter — they are not the ones building it.

4. Ask for a production photo with today's date. This sounds simple, but shell companies can't do it. They reuse 2022 stock photos. A real factory can put a handwritten sign with the date next to the line.

5. Ask what components they source in-house vs buy. A factory makes cells, BMS, or chassis and buys the rest. A trader buys everything. The answer tells you where margin gets added.

After five answers

Factory — good. Trader — acceptable if transparent on price. Shell — walk away.

Most buyers skip this and discover the answer after the deposit. The license, the map check, the QC process, the dated photo, the in-house breakdown — five answers in one email thread, and you know whether you're negotiating with the people who actually build the product, or with someone who resells it.

Use this as a procurement framework, not as legal, tax or technical advice. Verify each answer in writing before moving to samples.
