Alibaba Advanced Search — 4 Filters for Real Factories

Alibaba returns 10,000+ results for "lithium battery." Most are traders. How do you cut to real factories in 10 minutes? Use four Alibaba filters in this order.

Filter 1: Verified Supplier

Only show suppliers with the blue "Verified" badge. This means Alibaba has inspected their facility — typically a video audit or a third-party on-site check. It is not a guarantee, but it removes shell companies that exist only on paper. A supplier without the Verified badge could be anyone: a home-based trader, a re-seller, or a company that disappeared last year.

Filter 2: Gold Supplier Years

Set the minimum to 5 years. A factory that has been on Alibaba for 5+ years is less likely to disappear after your deposit. A 6-month gold supplier could be a rebranded trader, a new company, or a business that just finished a bad year. The years filter does not guarantee quality, but it removes the most volatile new sellers.

Filter 3: Business Type — Manufacturer

Use the left-side filter to select "Manufacturer." This removes pure trading companies. Note: some factories also trade, but the majority of trading-only companies get filtered out. After this step, you will still see traders who claim to be manufacturers — that is what the next step is for.

Filter 4: Product Category Match

Check the supplier's main product category. If they list "lithium battery" but also "LED lights," "furniture," and "kitchenware," they are a general trader. A real factory focuses on one product line. A supplier with 10 product categories is almost certainly a trading company using Alibaba's broad listing format.

What to do after filtering

Export the shortlist to a spreadsheet. For each supplier, check four things: business license, years on Alibaba, main product category, and minimum order quantity. The goal is not to pick a supplier yet — it is to create a shortlist of 20–30 candidates worth emailing. From that shortlist, you run the VERIFY step: check the business license, ask for a live video walk-through, and request reference customers in your market.

Filter first, email second. The goal is a 20–30 candidate shortlist, not a supplier pick.

Use this as a procurement framework, not as engineering, legal or tax advice. Always confirm supplier identity, product specs and payment terms in writing.
