The 20-Minute Video Call That Separates Real Chinese Factories From Virtual Ones

You have a shortlist of 5 suppliers. You have exchanged emails. Now it is time for a video call. But most buyers waste the call on small talk — "nice weather, how are you" — and walk away with zero actionable information.

A 20-minute video call with a Chinese factory should follow a fixed script. Here is the structure that works.

Minute 1–3: Walk the camera through the production line

Not the showroom. The actual line. Watch for: is the line running? Are there workers? Is there a work order board with a real customer name? If they keep the camera on the reception desk, that is data.

Minute 4–8: See the incoming material area

Where do cells and components arrive? Are there labeled boxes? Can they show you a cell brand label? If the "factory" is a trader's office, there will be no incoming material area.

Minute 9–12: See the QC room

What test equipment do they have? Can they show you a recent test report on a screen? A calibration sticker on the equipment? If the QC room is locked or empty, that is data.

Minute 13–16: Ask a technical question only a factory can answer

"Show me how you connect the BMS to the cell stack." "Walk me through your burn-in procedure." If the sales rep cannot answer and has to bring in an engineer, that is normal. If there is no engineer on the call, that is data.

Minute 17–20: One commercial question

"What is your current lead time for 500kWh? What is your deposit term? Can you show me a recent export invoice to a similar customer?"

What you are really doing

The point is not to impress them. The point is to see what they will not show you. A factory that refuses the camera walk-through is not a factory you want to buy from.

Use this as a procurement framework, not as legal, tax or technical advice. Always confirm spec, price and timing in writing.
