Stationary battery acceptance

Battery Usable Energy Needs Test Conditions

A battery offer may show nominal energy, rated capacity or a usable-energy figure. Those values are not automatically comparable. A buyer acceptance record must identify the exact tested unit, operating window, environmental conditions and measurement boundary behind the result.

Declare the tested unit

Identify whether the result covers a cell, module, rack, DC battery system or AC-coupled system. Record model, quantity, firmware, BMS configuration and protection settings. IEC 62620 covers lithium cells and batteries for industrial applications, including stationary uses, and states that the manufacturer clearly declares the tested unit.

Freeze the operating window

Define starting state of charge, charge-completion criteria, discharge cut-off, rest periods and repeat count. Record ambient and battery temperature. A change in any of these inputs can change the measured result, so a bare kWh value cannot establish equivalence.

Define load and measurement boundaries

State constant current, power profile or other agreed load, along with measurement point and sampling interval. Decide whether BMS, pumps, fans, HVAC, fire controls and conversion losses sit inside or outside the boundary. For AC-delivered energy, power-conversion and auxiliary behavior need their own agreed evidence.

Retain raw data

Keep time-linked voltage, current, power, energy, SOC and temperature data, plus instrument IDs and calibration status. Record alarms, protection actions and any manual intervention. The objective is a result that another competent party could understand and, within reasonable uncertainty, repeat.

Set the rule before the sample arrives

Choose the applicable standard or project method, acceptance threshold and retest/disposition rule before testing. IEC 61427-2 provides chemistry-neutral methods for verifying battery endurance, properties and electrical performance in on-grid renewable-energy storage, but it does not cover power-conversion/interface equipment. The purchase specification must close that project boundary.

Primary sources

The applicable edition, method and threshold depend on the product, application, contract and destination requirements. This article does not create a universal pass value.
