CE Marking: 8 Evidence Checks Before an EU-Bound Order

A CE logo is not an EU authority approval certificate. For procurement, it is the visible end of a conformity process that must be traced back to the exact model, applicable legislation and responsible parties.

Start with the exact product identity

Freeze the model, variants, intended use, label artwork and product photographs. A declaration or report for a similar family does not automatically cover the unit on the quotation. Cross-check every identifier across the quotation, label, Declaration of Conformity and supporting reports.

Build the conformity record

Request the signed and current EU Declaration of Conformity, the applicable legislation, standards and editions used, and relevant test or notified-body evidence when the applicable procedure requires it. The European Commission explains that there is no central EU body issuing a general CE certificate and that manufacturer responsibility sits at the centre of the process.

Verify the economic-operator route

Identify the manufacturer, importer and any other responsible economic operator for the actual transaction. Check traceability information, instructions and safety information for the destination market. The correct duties depend on the product, law, role and destination, so qualified compliance review may be necessary.

Use an eight-record buying gate

Before approval, reconcile: exact product identity; signed declaration; applicable legislation; standards and editions; test evidence; notified-body scope where relevant; labels and instructions; and the responsible economic-operator route. Record gaps as open actions rather than accepting a generic supplier statement.
