Why IP65 Does Not Prove Coastal Durability

IP65 can be relevant to an outdoor equipment decision, but it answers an ingress question. It does not by itself establish resistance to salt-laden air, UV exposure, high-temperature derating, condensation or every coastal warranty condition.

Keep the evidence boundaries separate

IEC 60529 classifies enclosure protection against access, solid objects and water ingress. Salt-mist resistance uses different methods, including IEC 60068-2-52 for cyclic salt-mist exposure of components and equipment. IEC 61701 provides salt-mist test sequences for PV modules. These scopes are different because the risks are different.

Match reports to the exact configuration

Check the exact model, enclosure option, mounting orientation, covers and cable glands represented by the IP evidence. For corrosion evidence, verify the method, severity, duration, pass criteria and tested configuration. A standard number without the underlying report is not enough to judge coverage.

Review materials and operating limits

Build a materials list for the enclosure, fasteners, connectors, exposed metalwork and coatings. Add operating-temperature limits, derating curves, UV exposure, ventilation and clearance requirements. Installation details can determine whether a laboratory result remains relevant in service.

Get the warranty answer in writing

Ask whether the intended coastal distance, orientation and maintenance regime are allowed by the written warranty. Testing supports a decision; it does not create a universal service-life guarantee. Final suitability should be reviewed by qualified project professionals for the actual site.
