Payment risk and buyer protection
A Deposit Is Not the Risk — an Unverified Supplier Is
We talk to buyers every week who negotiated a strong price, then wired 30–50% upfront to a supplier they had verified only on paper. Sometimes it works out. When it does not, recovery across borders is slow, expensive and often fruitless. The deposit was never the problem. The unverified supplier was.

What makes a deposit safe
T/T with a deposit is common in China sourcing and not inherently wrong. What makes it defensible is evidence, not optimism: a registered legal entity, a real factory, verified capacity that matches your order size, and test reports that match the product model in your quotation. A polished website and fast WhatsApp replies are not on that list.
Tie releases to documents, not dates
The single most useful habit is writing payment milestones against objective evidence rather than calendar days. Release the balance against shipping documents, pre-shipment inspection results and delivery evidence — not against the supplier's promised date. If you cannot name the document that triggers a release, the milestone is a wish, not a control.
When escrow or L/C actually fit
Escrow and third-party payment services sit between full T/T and letters of credit. They are most useful for first orders with a new supplier, or for samples and small tooling payments. A letter of credit shifts risk to the bank chain, costs time and money, and makes sense for larger orders with established suppliers. Escrow does not replace due diligence — check the service's own dispute process before trusting it with your funds.
Fair terms protect both sides
Suppliers want certainty of payment; buyers want certainty of goods. Written, milestone-based terms achieve both. That alignment is what makes a long relationship possible — and it is what we help buyers build into every first order.
Use these controls as a procurement framework, not as product-specific engineering, legal, regulatory, banking or warranty advice. Verify the actual product, transaction, route and jurisdiction with qualified professionals.
